By “the album,” fans mean the reggae record Rihanna confirmed she was making more than a year ago: R9, as the Navy has labeled it. (It will be Rihanna’s ninth.) So, is R9 still a reggae album? “I like to look at it as a reggae-inspired or reggae-infused album,” Rihanna says. “It’s not gonna be typical of what you know as reggae. But you’re going to feel the elements in all of the tracks.” I ask why reggae feels right for this moment, and she says, “Reggae always feels right to me. It’s in my blood. It doesn’t matter how far or long removed I am from that culture, or my environment that I grew up in; it never leaves. It’s always the same high. Even though I’ve explored other genres of music, it was time to go back to something that I haven’t really homed in on completely for a body of work.”
When I ask about a release date, Rihanna’s face morphs into a grimace, equal parts amusement and terror. “No, oh my God, they’re gonna kill you for that!” she exclaims. “And they’re going to kill me more!” It is so strange to see @badgalriri exhibit any sort of emotion categorizable as fear that for a moment I have no clue who she’s talking about. Wait—Vogue? Your record company? The international reggae police? “I’m talking the Navy—my scary fans,” Rihanna clarifies. “But they’ve earned it,” she is quick to add. “They got me here.”
Does any part of Rihanna foresee a day when she might decide that, in fact, there will be no more music? “Oh, nooo,” she says. “Music is, like, speaking in code to the world, where they get it. It’s the weird language that connects me to them. Me the designer, me the woman who creates makeup and lingerie—it all started with music. It was my first pen pal–ship to the world. To cut that off is to cut my communication off. All of these other things flourish on top of that foundation.”

She also has a forthcoming collaboration with Lil Nas X. She can’t disclose details but says it “may not even be with music.” And there are signs R9 is nearly finished. (The week after we meet, one Robyn R. Fenty registers a new song called “Private Loving” to the music-rights organization BMI.) She’s already in the “discovery stage” for her 10th album, in fact. “We always went into the music this time around saying that we were going to do two different pieces of art,” she tells me. “One was gonna be inspired by the music that I grew up listening to. And one was gonna be the evolution of where I’m going next with music.”

Viene a decir que quiere que R9 tenga esencia reggae pero que suene “distinto”. Vaya, que no sea la típica canción reggae que se te pega, sino que quiere ir un poco más allá. Si te digo la verdad no sé cómo lo hará pero sé que lo conseguirá porque es experta en crear “su sonido”, por muchos temazos comerciales que haya tenido. Su estilo es suyo y su timbre de voz la hacen muy única.

Cuando le preguntan si se ve dejando de lado la música dice rotundamente que no. Vacila un poco con el tema de la navy, que somos mu pesaos pero que sabe que nos merecemos el disco (matiza), así que bien .

La parte más interesante es la del final:

Deja la puerta abierta a un doble álbum. Hoy justo me lo decía también @Topa . Por ahí corren rumores de que el presupuesto del disco es bastante tocho y que será doble, pero no hay nada confirmado (aunque para mí ese trozo de entrevista es una confirmación casi).

Hombre de que habrá disco es segurísimo, pero yo creo que este año ya no, se dice que Jay le estaba metiendo prisa y le ha dado carpetazo, se le ha pirao ya del todo, así que ahora es su propia jefa en la música ( un poco de miedito)...Ahora si que hará lo que le salga del papo para bien y para mal.
